PEACOCKS IN PARADISE
A Flight of Fancy Around Mallorca

It’s here! the long-awaited seventh title in my travel series about how to live the dream in a Mediterranean country. Join me on this adventure as I delve into the island’s authentic heartland, exploring nature reserves, bird sanctuaries and paprika, fruit and almond farms.

From my recent travels I will introduce you to the makers of siurell whistles, palm leaf baskets, hot sauces and ensaimada pastries while visiting local producers of wine, craft beer, gin and brandy – and Mallorca’s famed herbes liqueur.

Meanwhile, my chum, Alison and I are tackling all 54 Tramuntana peaks over 1,000m, enduring the arduous overnight Guell hike to Lluc Monastery along the way.

Here’s a little peek inside …

“The small town of Es Pla de na Tesa in the municipality of Marratxí, northeast of Palma, is pulsating with happy day-trippers. Today is La Fira de la llet d’Ametlla, the almond milk fair, which has proven an annual highlight for many Mallorcans ever since its inauguration fourteen years ago.

“The tradition of making almond milk on the island harks back to the seventeenth century, when friars of the Catholic Order of Mínima in the town of Santa Maria del Camí would grind almonds with water for their daily tipple. The order, which was founded in 1435, was avant-garde enough to be vegetarian, so almond milk was a must for the inmates’ daily protein intake. At the monastery an enormous almond grinder was installed for the friars, which was shared with the local community come Christmastime, when everyone developed an almond milk fetish.

“For some reason, today’s fair takes place in nearby Marratxí and not Santa Maria del Camí. Perhaps almond milk fatigue beset the town and it was only too willing to hand over the nutty baton to its close neighbour.”
