A little taster from Peacocks in Paradise …
“He wanders over to a rickety old wooden table under the trees and dusts it down with a cloth. I watch as crisp, curled leaves and desiccated insects fall to the orchard floor.
“As Pep fetches a basket full of local goodies from his van, I take a bottle of red wine from the boot. It is one of those we bought from the bodega at Biniagual. Juana reaches into the basket and pulls out a cotton tablecloth and plastic plates and cups. She places a big loaf of fresh brown bread on the table along with sobrassada, sheep’s cheese, black olives, salted almonds and ramallet tomatoes. Pep thumps down a small pot of sea salt and a bottle of home-produced virgin olive oil.
“We all wipe down the wooden chairs and wait for the Scotsman to pour the wine. The first sip is like ambrosia and we all sigh in accord.”
